ACT Staff Step Back in Time

Trust staff members mark commemorative date with a walk across Plymouth’s seafront.

Wednesday 16th September 2020, marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth which went on to discover the ‘new world’. This morning, Argyle Community Trust staff members, including members of the Mayflower 400: Get Active organising team took part in a morning walk along one of the bespoke Plymouth trails, to mark the historic moment for the city of Plymouth and far beyond.

The Trust has been involved in the Mayflower 400 UK commemorations since late 2017, appointed by Plymouth City Council as the lead body in the stimulation and coordination of a sport and wellbeing programme and portfolio of events to raise participation in the city. Whilst COVID-19 has impacted provisions during 2020, plans are in place for a revamped programme to take place between September 2020 and July of 2021. The programme combines elements of education, sport & wellbeing activities that engage the communities of Plymouth.

Two differing education programmes; ‘Sporting Voyage’ & ‘Mid-ground’ will gift primary school learners with the opportunity to learn more about both the voyage of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims aboard, but also focus on acceptance within communities and enabling young people to be tolerant to those of minority backgrounds within the city of Plymouth. The Get Active campaign, will focus on a new sport with each passing month, working with local clubs and role models to get people young and old reengaged with or into exercise and activity. In addition we will be supporting events such as the Rehab Triathlon for wounded, injured and sick service or former-servicemen and women & the Special Olympic Games trial events, hosted here in the city.

It is a proud time to be a janner and our staff team would like to reaffirm our commitment to creating a sporting offer for all via the Mayflower 400: Get Active campaign.
